Dennis Quaid with his newborn babies

Wow…..this shit is just all kind of messed up! Dennis Quaid’s newborn twins whom he obtained via surrogate mother where given an accidental overdose of the anti-coagulant drug Heparin, as well as several other patients staying at the Cedars-Sinai hospital. The normal dosage for infants would be around 10 units, while the babies received around 10,000. Which is pretty fucked up. I mean, I don’t care how bad your math is, 10 and 10,000 are WAY different, and 10,000 units of anything kind of sounds high, especially for babies that were just born. TMZ reports:

Late Sunday night, both babies started to “bleed out.” Both babies are now at Cedars in the neo-natal intensive care unit where we’re told they are stable.
We’re told a technician stored the Heparin in the wrong place, and when a nurse grabbed the medicine for the babies without looking — it was the wrong dosage.
A source says the babies are now being given Protamine, which reverses the effects of Heparin.

Then, Dennis and his wife issued this statement through their rep:

Dennis and Kimberly appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers and hope they can maintain their privacy during this difficult time.

The hospital issued this apologetic statement in response:

I want to extend my deepest apologies to the families who were affected by this situation, and we will continue to work with them on any concerns or questions they may have. This was a preventable error, involving a failure to follow our standard policies and procedures, and there is no excuse for that to occur at Cedars-Sinai. Although it appears at this point that there was no harm to any patient, we take this situation very seriously. We are conducting a comprehensive investigation, cooperating fully with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services and will take all necessary steps to ensure that this never happens here again.

I like how the tool issuing this statement tries to throw in the fact that no one has died from this, or been seriously harmed, like that makes up for it in some sick way.

So lets all wish them well, because no one wants to spend Thanksgiving in a hospital worrying about their new babies!
